The Pipe of Port

84a High Street, Southend, Essex Tel: 01702 614606

The Pipe of Port first opened its doors in 1976 and has been run by sisters Janet & Sue and Sue’s husband Stephen since 1981. One of the guiding philosophies of the family is that in an ever-changing world some things should always remain the same.

This ideal is reflected in the décor and general welcoming and homely atmosphere of the Pipe of port. The wine cellars offer a wide range of wines from around the world. We have visited very many of the great wine regions of the world seeking out interesting winemakers with a passion for their craft.

Our crusty old Dickensian candle-lit Wine Bar with mahogany tables and sawdust covered floors is one of the most atmospheric venues in town.

All our food is freshly made by ourselves, we use top quality ingredients from some of the best suppliers in the county. In addition to our standard menu we always have a few “specials” and at lunchtime we serve a light lunch/snack menu.

Some of you will know that it has long been our desire to set up a Pipe of Port wine club. Many of you have commented that you would kindly support this. Well, we have taken the plunge!

After long deliberations we have decided on the price point and frequency of the offer. We will offer out twelve bottles (occasionally 1 might be a half bottle) every two months. The price this year will be £100 inclusive of all delivery charges within our set out postcode areas.

The idea is that the wines will not be your day to day glass whilst doing the ironing, rather perhaps the wine for Sunday lunch if you get my meaning! Membership is free. You do not have to take any wine at all, provided you cancel. In addition to the wine we will have a summer party open only to members and we will sneak the odd one of you into a trade tasting over time. Here you will be able to help us choose the wines for the club.

As we gain more members, we believe our purchasing power added to our good name, would allow us to offer some real stunners. The club will be a real challenge to us and will let us explore little known regions for wine of real character before those good supermarket marketing folk get their hands on them. £100 is a lot of money, but at just over £8 per bottle, delivered to your door, its worth a trial.
