SOME of England’s most popular literary characters are fighting it out to be named the nations favourite to celebrate St Georges Day. Schools across the Basildon district have submitted suggestions for their favourite English characters in literature and the shortlist will be announced next week.

The competition, launched by Basildon Council, will see some of the most enduring characters taking on modern-day classics in a public vote open to all residents. Voting information will be announced this week.

Characters including Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter and Ebenezer Scrooge are among the names hoping to get shortlisted.
